How this actually works
A QR code links to a PDF, it does not contain one
This trips people up. A QR code holds a few thousand characters at most — nowhere near a document. What it holds is the address of your PDF. So the file needs to live somewhere reachable first.

Whichever you choose, open the link in a private browser window before you print. If it asks you to sign in, your customers will be asked too.
Make the PDF phone-friendly
- Keep it under a few megabytes. People scan on mobile data, often on a slow connection.
- Design it portrait. A landscape A4 menu forces pinching and zooming on a phone.
- Use real text, not a scanned image, so it stays sharp and screen readers can read it.
- Give the file a permanent address. Re-uploading creates a new link and silently kills every printed code.

Can a QR code store the PDF itself?
No. The maximum a QR code can hold is about 3 kilobytes of text — far smaller than any real document. The code stores a link to the file, which is why the PDF has to be hosted somewhere first.
What is the best free place to host a PDF for a QR code?
Google Drive is the quickest if you already have an account: upload the file, set sharing to “Anyone with the link”, then copy that link. Your own website is better long term because the address stays under your control.
Why does my Google Drive QR code ask people to sign in?
The file is still set to restricted sharing. Open it in Drive, choose Share, and change General access to “Anyone with the link”. Then test the link in a private browser window before printing.
Can I update the PDF without reprinting the code?
Yes, as long as the link stays the same. Replace the file in place — most services offer “Manage versions” or an overwrite option. Deleting and re-uploading creates a new address and breaks every printed code.
Will it open in a PDF reader or a browser?
That depends on the phone. Modern iPhones and Android devices open PDFs directly in the browser. Some hosts force a download instead, so always test on both platforms first.
